CCHT/ CHT Certification Breakdown for Dialysis Technicians: New ESRD Regulations

  • All dialysis technicians must be certified as of 04/15/2010
  • All newly hired dialysis technicians have 18 months from the hire date to become certified.

Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission
Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT)

CCHT Requirements:

  • A minimum of a high school diploma or the equivalent (4 years work experience in dialysis as of 10/14/2008 in lieu of a high school diploma).
  • Technicians hired after 10/14/2008 must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of a training program that included both classroom instruction and supervised clinical experience.
  • Obtain the signature of a preceptor/supervisor to verify training and clinical experience. It is recommended, but not required, that an applicant have a minimum of six months (or 1,000 hours) of clinical experience, including the training period, prior to taking the exam.
  • Be in compliance with state regulations of the practice of hemodialysis dialysis technicians.
  • Applicants must meet the experience requirement (for certification) of the state in which they practice.

Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology
Certified Hemodialysis Technologist/Technician (CHT)

CHT Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. In lieu of a diploma, 4 yrs work experience prior to 10/14/08
  • Current active participation in an ESRD facility or
  • Successful completion of an accredited dialysis course approved by the BONENT Board.
  • One year of experience (12 months) in nephrology patient care.
  • Submit two signed letters of reference with the application.
  • Must be employed at the time of application submission.

National Nephrology Certification Organization
Certified Clinical Nephrology Technology (CCNT)

CCNT Requirements:

  • A minimum of a high school diploma or the equivalent. In lieu of a diploma, 4 yrs work experience    prior to 10/14/08
  • At least one year full-time or the equivalent (2,000 hours) experience in nephrology technology OR completion of at least a one-year educational program in nephrology technology
